My Etching Journey

The Journey Begins

You will be seeing a lot of this twggy tree that sits on the table in the studio at PixelPoint.

I am on a journey to produce copper plates with various treatments for use in my custom hand bound journals. I plan to share my experiences and to seek help on this forum. The end products will include:

1. Etched plates as the starting place for Champlevé enameling technique. I'll use these plates as adornments for my book covers as well as for for clasps.

2. Etched plates for printing purposes of book plates as well as illustrations in thematic journals.

3. Etched plates for creating various chops and embossed paper effects in my journals.

4. Etched plates that will then be treated with various copper patina effects. I'll use these plates as adornments on book covers as well as for clasps.

My tactics will be:

1. To use my computer to generate my art. I like to work in a vector graphic program like Adobe Illustrator as I like the control over fine lines and artistic effects that are suitable for printmaking. I also like to be able to scale my graphics without distortion.

2. To use PosJet film in conjunction with my Epson 2200 ink jet printer to produce positive and negative films.

3. To use Puretch film as my media for transferring my images to the plates in preparation for my copper etching step.

4. To use the electro etching approach to etch my plates.

5. To use torch method enameling as my plates are small.

6. I have not decided on my technique for using the plates for printing and embossing.
