Churchill Weavers March 2007 - I am heartbroken to learn that Churchill Weavers is being shut down. A classic case of a centry old company being bought by a corporation and then being closed after it can't make a profit under the new ownership. When these wonderful balnkets are gone, they are gone. We have a very few left. |
I was ramblin' around the Southern Highland Craft Guild show in Asheville in search of fabrics for the gallery. I was very impressed with the work shown in the Churchill Weavers booth. Although I normally choose to work with individual artists, I was drawn to this group of artisans not only because of their unique work, but also because of their unique heritage. I settled on the heirloom baby blankets because of the unique design elements. Founder David Carroll Churchill was a missionary to India at the turn of the century. As part of his work there, he designed and built hand looms to help the impoverished people better compete with the power looms of the day. When Churchill returned to the United States with his wife Eleanor, he settled in a small town at the foothills of the Cumberland Mountains. The town was Berea, Kentucky. Using his loom designs, he and his wife began Churchill Weavers in 1922. Eleanor designed and wove the fabrics, David designed and built the looms. They employed the local families to weave the traditional designs. Today things are still done in much the same was as they were done in the early days. The same equipment and same practices are still in use today as they were 80 years ago.
