Mary and I set out in early October for a ride into Western North Carolina in search of Crim Bassett and the studio of Bee Global. There we knew we would find the home of the Bee Glow™ Lanterns that had attracted us at the Spring 2004 Southern Highland Craft Guild Show.

We had pretty good directions but had become slightly lost. We stopped to check our map and to inspect a very nice little log cabin that caught our eyes. A gentleman riding his mother on a golf cart equipped with an oxygen supply zipped up to see if we needed help. Well, that is another story, but it tells you something about the community that is home to these wonderful bees wax luminaries.

We found our way to the Stecoah Community Center, and Crim was waiting for us with the globes that were promised. I got a tour of the studio and "wax works." We also got to hear about Crim's wild flower gardens and the land that she loves so very much. The community center was a vibrant school for things done the mountain way, and that was a bonus for our visit.

Crim has moved her studio about 2 miles away from the Community Center but she is still located in Stecoah Community. I am looking forward to a visit in July when the wildflower gardens will be in full bloom.

I borrowed this quote from Crim's writings as I think it pretty well sums up what these folks are all about: "The spaciousness of mountain life has allowed us to create our wildflower garden, a place of tremendous joy and love. The garden has evolved into a magical place where columbines dance in the wind and bee balm, with its bright fuchsia flowers and sweet mint aroma, attracts a rhythmic union of butterflies and of course honeybees. The energy and life force of these flowers are carried into our lanterns."

Bee Glow™ lanterns and pillar candles are handcrafted lanterns using all natural beeswax and wild flowers from Crim's and Jeff's garden. These beeswax lanterns shine with a peaceful light from within, transforming the small flame produced by a tea light candle into a soft, illuminating glow.
